Hermosa Beach is one of those few remaining places in America where the
beaches
are extraordinary and NOT overcrowded. The sand is soft and clean, the
beaches among the deepest you'll find anywhere, and the community?
Well, Hermosa Beach may not be as "on the edge" as Venice Beach, nor as
formal as Manhattan Beach, but it is an ideal blend of the two. Hermosa
is the site for a number of national level Volley Ball competitions and
you can see the pros practicing throughout the year on some of the
dozens upon dozens of Volley Ball courts permanently available to the
public on a first come first serve basis.
There are
restauarants
that run the gamut from elegant and expensive to very informal, from
one of the best Philly Cheesesteak joints on the West Coast, called
Mikes,
(and that's coming from someone who was raised in Philadelphia!), to
Thai, Cajun, Italian, Sushi, Steak Houses, and Ice Cream
shops. There are
clubs
for live music up and down the Pier and throughout Hermosa Beach. One
of the best run Comedy Clubs in the world is just steps from the Pier
and the beach in
The Comedy and Magic Club, that features the very finest stand-up acts every night of the week, including Jay Leno on most Sunday nights.
The
weather
is typical Southern California beach weather: cool in the mornings and
evenings and warm in the daytime; almost never hot. (If you like hot,
go to The San Fernando Valley or The Dessert.)
The
public schools are just plain amazing: among the highest rated
elementary and middle schools anywhere (see my link to Hermosa Beach
Unified), and families get to choose their high school, from either of
the two High Schools serving Redondo Beach, either
Redondo Union or
Redondo Shores (a designated California Model necessary small High School), or the other award-winning public high school,
Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach.
There
is more to do in Hermosa Beach than almost anywhere else you'll ever
live; jogging or biking on The Strand, strolling the beach, surfing,
boating,
SCUBA
trips, lots of entertainment choices, a reasonable drive to Hollywood
and West LA, shopping all over the place with very high grade malls
throughout the South Bay, (even an
Apple Store in nearby Manhattan Beach), signing up for any number of
Community Center sponsored
activities including beginners to advance level Volley Ball courses,
arts, and tons of activities for the kids, joining the
Lawn Bowling
group, enjoying the weekly Farmer's Market, partricipating in community
theater, one of the many service organzations like Kiwanis Club, or one
of the many special events like the annual
Art Walk. Check out the link to the City of Hermosa Beach for more information.
Hermosa
Beach is a great place to raise a family, and yet you should also know
that it is a younger community than most, with roughly 60% of its
residents being single and in their 20s, so weekends can get a little
noisy around The Pier.
In
terms of housing, there's an eclectic mix of contemporary, traditional
beach cottages, Mediterranean style mini-mansions, and lots in between.
Many of the homes in Hermosa have roof top decks (with a thirty foot
height restriction), that afford a variety of views of either the beach
or the city itself. There are tons of town homes and a fair number of
rentals, in addition to many single family homes. Although there are a
few condominiums priced in the $500k to $750k range, prices
are generally just under $1M to well above $10M.
